Sod: Instant Results with Considerations
Sod is often chosen for one main reason: instant gratification. It provides an immediate, finished look because you’re installing a pre-grown turf mat.
What Is Sod?
Sod is typically made up of Kentucky bluegrass that has been grown in full sun for two to three years before harvest. Once installed, it creates an instant turf canopy and can be effective in specific applications.
Benefits of Sod
- Immediate lawn appearance
- Useful for stabilizing steep banks when properly secured
- Predictable short-term results
Drawbacks of Sod
While sod looks great right away, there are some important considerations:
- Potential hidden issues such as thatch buildup, pathogens, or insects that existed before installation
- High water demand during establishment
- Higher overall cost, including both material and labor
Sod must also be installed in the right environment. If your property receives six to eight hours of full sun and has minimal tree cover, sod can perform well. However, shaded areas tell a different story.
In properties with trees or mixed sun and shade, sod often looks fantastic in year one. By year two, thinning typically begins in shaded areas. By year three and four, turf quality continues to decline, often leading homeowners to explore other options.
In these cases, we usually recommend hydro seeding.
