Solving the Stair Dilemma: A Thoughtful Entry Deck to Garage Transformation

Some outdoor problems don’t just affect how a space looks—they affect how it functions every single day. In the summer of 2025, we worked with a homeowner who was struggling with the stairs leading from their front entry deck down to the garage. The setup was outdated, awkward, and didn’t reflect the quality or style of the home.

The existing stairs were constructed from old wood and were steep, uneven, and uncomfortable to use. Navigating them, especially while carrying items to and from the garage, felt unsafe. Along the driveway, an aging retaining wall made of railroad ties was beginning to deteriorate, creating both structural concerns and a disconnected look. Together, these elements made the transition from the entry deck to the garage feel cluttered and uninviting.

Our goal was to create a solution that felt intentional, safe, and visually cohesive. After evaluating the layout and grade, we designed a new stair system using granite steps, a durable and slip-resistant material ideal for Minnesota’s climate.

We also replaced the railroad tie retaining wall along the driveway with natural boulders, improving long-term stability while introducing a more organic look. To finish the space, decorative rock was added to both sides of the new Mesabi granite stairs, creating a smooth and beautiful transition between the hardscape elements and the surrounding landscape.

Once the design was finalized, we removed the old wooden stairs and deteriorating railroad ties, prepped the site for proper drainage and stability, and carefully set each granite step and boulder into place. Every detail was considered to ensure the space would hold up season after season.

The finished project is both functional and striking. The granite stairs provide solid, safe access from the front entry deck to the garage, while the boulder retaining wall adds strength and natural character along the driveway. The added rock on both sides of the stairs ties everything together, creating a polished and seamless transition. What was once an awkward and aging setup is now a durable and attractive feature of the home.
