Proper mowing is one of the most important parts of spring lawn maintenance.
Before your first mow, sharpen your lawn mower blade. Dull blades tear grass instead of cutting it cleanly, which can cause brown tips, weaken the lawn, and increase the risk of disease.
For the first few mows of the season, set your mower slightly lower than your normal cutting height. This allows sunlight to reach the base of the grass, encourages new growth, and helps water and nutrients reach the roots more efficiently.
As spring progresses, gradually raise your mowing height. Taller grass later in the season protects roots from heat stress, holds moisture better, and supports thicker turf.
Battery-powered mower tip: If you use a battery-powered mower, batteries should be stored indoors during winter. Leaving them in freezing temperatures can reduce performance and lifespan. In spring, run a maintenance or conditioning cycle if your charger allows.
